Chile with Kids in 30 Days

If you’re wondering what and where to spend time in Chile with kids, you’ve come to the right place! We spent the last month of my maternity leave in Chile with our two kiddos who were 5 months and 2.5 years at the time. This is a breakdown of the places we visited and things we did! We stayed in each location for about a week, so you can use this to customize your Chile itinerary based on how much time you have and hopefully this will answer all the questions you have about visiting Chile with kids 🙂

Sample itineraries in Chile with kids

Santiago Chile (4-5 nights)

You could probably fit most of these sights and attractions in 2-3 days, but assuming most visitors to Chile are coming from far and away I’ve budgeted some time for adjusting to the timezone and recovering from a likely long-haul flight the day before.

When you’re finally ready to explore, make sure not to miss these incredible places in Santiago!

  • Baha’i temple
  • San Cristobal Hill
  • Plaza de Armas
  • Sky Costanera
  • Cerro Manquehue

Atacama Desert (4 nights)

Atacama Desert doesn’t sound like the most attractive place to take your kids, and I honestly can’t say that it is. BUT! It’s totally possible to have an amazing time and see some of the most remote and driest places on earth if you’re up for the adventure! Here are some of the places that we loved and were completely safe and fun to do with kids in Atacama.

  • San Pedro

  • Walking on the moon at Valle de la Luna and hiking up massive sand dunes in Valle de la Muerte.
  • Visiting the Lagunas of Atacama; Laguna Chaxa, Lagunas Escondida de Baltinache, and Canon de Guatin
  • If you have time, take a 4 hour detour to Antofagasta to see the Hand of the Desert

Chile Beaches (4 nights)

You can’t go to Chile and not experience some of its beautiful coastline! Chile has one of the longest coastlines in the world and is home to numerous swimmable and surfable beaches. Vina del Mar is one of the closest towns to Santiago. It could be visited as a day trip from Santiago if you’re short on time, or could be stretched into a full week stay!

Here are some of the things we enjoyed doing at Viña del Mar with kids

  • Seeing and hiking up the Concon Dunes was our highlight here.
  • Swim or surf at Renaca beach
  • Stroll along Vina Del Mar town and visit some of its fun restaurants!

Chile Patagonia (5 night)

If Patagonia with kids seems like a far fetched dream, I’m here to tell you otherwise. It’s definitely not a walk in the part since getting to the southernmost point of South America is no easy feat! But I am here to tell you that it’s absolutely worth it. The views here are like no other, and the wildlife is incredibly diverse. This was our highlight of Chile with kids. Getting from Santiago to Patagonia involved a 3 hour plane ride and a 4 hour car drive. Here are the things we enjoyed most in Patagonia!

Puerto Montt (5 nights)

The Chile Lake Region is absolutely stunning and completely underrated. It’s very reminiscent of European lakes, full of lush green forests, hills and mountains, but it’s also home to several volcanos.

When visiting this area, make sure not to miss

  • Petrohue Falls
  • Puerto Varas
  • Frutillar
  • Puyehue Park
  • Cochamo
