Minimalist packing list for traveling with kids

Carry-on only for 5; 4 roller carryons, 1 camera bag, 4 personal items.

We always try to stick to carryon only to make sure we have less stuff to lug around with us from place to place. That means we’re really particular about what we bring with us and we try to keep toys and entertainment to a minimum!

I’m a strong believer that kids can find entertainment in the littlest things and ‘the more you bring, the more you need’.

That being said, here are the few things we do bring with us when traveling

TOYS & ENTERTAINMENT

Ages 0-1

Kids really don’t need much at this age. They will be entertained by a piece of paper, your keys, a box from the recycling bin, tupperware, etc. For the plane and car rides I pack lots of snacks, maybe one of their favorite toys and a couple favorite baby books

Don’t forget your travel diaper changer, preferred baby carrier, some diapers, wipes and a spare sheet so you can lay your baby down wherever you need. We don’t ever bring our stroller!

Baby Carrier

With three kids, I’ve gone through many different carriers and Baby Tula has consistently been the best one! We’ve done both the baby and toddler versions for older and heavier kiddos.

Diaper changer

This is an absolute must for any type of travel with baby. We make sure to pack an extra set of clothes in one of the pockets, have wipes, and diapers ready to go. We don’t need a diaper bag, just this!

Felt Busy Books

I love these busy books! There are many different versions online so just pick whichever theme appeals to you most. Our kids really enjoyed these from about 6-18mo.

Ages 2-5

This age is pretty hard as they’re not entertained by much and we don’t like to rely on iPads. Our philosophy is that if there’s a screen on the flight, they can watch whatever they want, but if there’s no in-flight entertainment we have books, drawing equipment and a ton of snacks for entertainment.

Ages 6-8

This is the golden age for travel and it truly starts getting so much easier at this age. We have a kindle for each kid so that we don’t have to bring a whole ton of books with us, and the kids can easily spend hours absorbed in their books. Use the Libby app to borrow books from your local library!

This was a recent Christmas gift for our older kiddos and they absolutely love it!

Kindle Kids

We use our Libby app to borrow books from the library and load them on the Kindle. This way we don’t need to lug around a bunch of books for our little 8-yo-bookworm!

Swiss Gear carryon

We’ve gotten one of these for each member of the family at this point because they’re quite durable and easy for the kids to push around. They also fit so much!

CLOTHING

We are fully bought into Reima gear for kids. Reima is hands down the most durable, comfortable and stylish outdoor clothing line I’ve seen for kids! We absolutely love their snowsuits for our snowboarding adventures, their rain gear for wet destinations, and their barefoot shoes for every day activities.
